What really happened in the cockpit of Air France Flight 11? Shortly before landing in Paris, panic suddenly reigned in the cockpit on Tuesday. The plane with the registration F-GSQJ is still on the grounds of Charles de Gaulle Airport near Paris on Saturday. This emerges from data from the Flightradar24 portal. The airline is silent. The French aviation authority BEA writes: “We are still analyzing the flight data.”

“Stop, stop!” Panicked calls from a pilot go over the radio on Tuesday morning. There are obviously major problems in the cockpit of an Air France Boeing 777 from New York. The French aviation authority speaks of a “serious incident”. RTL has the recording of the radio traffic between the pilot and the tower – hear it for yourself in the video above.

The huge jet gets out of control on the approach to Charles de Gaulle Airport near Paris – the pilots can no longer control the machine:

  • Pilot: “Stop, stop!”
  • Tower: “Air France 11?”
  • Pilot: “I’ll report back, I’ll report back.”
  • Tower: “Air France […]abort approach at 1500 feet immediately.”
  • Tower: “Air France […]?”
  • Pilot: “Yes, we abort at 1,500 feet.”

A number of warning signals from the cockpit can be heard in the background. Shortly before the runway, the Boeing 777 suddenly swerved to the left and deviated from the course. You can hear at least one of the pilots breathing heavily. It looks like he’s struggling desperately with the plane.

  • Tower: “All launches below you are halted. Report when ready.”
  • Pilot: “This is AF11. We went around after a control problem. The aircraft stopped responding.”

Air France pilot: “Flight control problem, the plane did pretty much everything”

The French civil aviation authority is now investigating the serious incident. A safety investigation had been initiated due to control instability, course fluctuations and problems with instrument operation on the final approach, the authority said in Paris on Wednesday. The machine’s flight recorder and the voice recording of the crew were evaluated. On Thursday, the authority added worrying words: “We will communicate when we understand what happened.”

As the newspaper “Le Parisien” reports, the plane was at an altitude of around 370 meters when the pilots decided to go around.

Air France reacts – plane is almost 20 years old

According to the newspaper, Air France described the reaction of the pilots as a standard procedure for which crews of all airlines would be trained. The airline hasn’t come forward with any further updates since then.

The aircraft with the aircraft registration number (like the registration number on a car) F-GSQJ is around 17 years old. This version of Air France’s Boeing 777-300 can seat 296 passengers. It is not known how many were actually on board. (rsa / dpa / Le Parisien / AV Herald)
