A Boeing 737-MAX flew for the first time in over a year and a half with passengers on board on Wednesday. Aircraft of this type have been grounded worldwide since March 2019, after two crashes in five months. Wednesday’s flight was operated by American Airlines.
The airline has many aircraft of this type and wants to show that it is safe again. About ninety journalists and cabin crew and pilots were on board. The flight was from Dallas to Tulsa. Both cities are in the United States. The first commercial flight with the aircraft is scheduled for December 29, 2020.
In 2018 and 2019, two 737-MAX aircraft crashed, killing a total of 346 people. Immediately all flights with this aircraft were canceled and Boeing started tinkering with the aircraft to make it safe again.
Last month, the American aviation authority FAA lifted the flight ban again. However, Boeing still had to make various adjustments and pilots must first be trained. The European authority EASA is also expected to lift the flight ban soon.
Families of the next of kin are not happy that the aircraft is already on the air. They point out that the results of the investigation into the second crash have not yet been published and that it is better to wait for it.
