(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kang Jin-wook = As glaciers melt due to climate change in the European Alps, bodies of people who disappeared decades ago are being found one after another.

The American CNN broadcast reported on the 23rd (local time) that the body of a man who appeared to have died in 2001 was found in the Schlatenkis Glacier area of East Tyrol, Austria.

The body was found at about 2,900 meters above sea level.

A local climbing guide accidentally found it and reported it to the police, and the body was taken by helicopter, CNN reported.

Police said the man appeared to have been involved in an accident in 2001 while traveling with ski equipment.

The backpack found next to the body contained cash, a bank card and a driver’s license.

Police tentatively identified the man as a 37-year-old Austrian.

The exact identity will come in a few weeks following a DNA test, police said.

Earlier, on the 12th, the body of an Italian man was found in Matterhorn, Switzerland, and this man was found to have disappeared while skiing in Matterhorn in March 2019.

Also, on the 29th of last month, the remains of a German climber who disappeared in 1986 were found along the Theodul Glacier in Zermatt, Switzerland, along with his hiking boots and crampons.

Dr. Lindsay Nicholson, a glaciologist at the University of Innsbruck in Austria, said in an interview with CNN last month that as glaciers melt due to climate change, objects that were previously unknown or bodies of missing people are sometimes found.

“The glaciers are melting little by little over a long period of time,” he said, adding that this trend will continue because of the recent lack of snowfall.

CNN reports that even if ambitious targets for climate change are met, half of the world’s glaciers could disappear by the end of this century.

According to Greenpeace, between 2019 and 2022 in Schlatenkis, where the body was found, a whopping 60 to 100 meters of glacier disappeared.

“If we continue to emit emissions as we do now, generations to come will face the Alps without glaciers in most areas,” Nicholson said. “This is very sad.”

Currently, about 2 billion people use glacial melt water for drinking.

In addition, given the fact that sea levels rise when glaciers melt, the disappearance of glaciers could cause many problems, CNN pointed out.
