The body of 20-year-old Shayiet Wongsosoeparto, who disappeared into the depths of the Saramacca River in Groningen on Sunday, was recovered today.
At around 11 a.m. on that day, the Groningen police received a report that a male had disappeared into the depths of the Saramacca River near the Misgunstweg on the waterfront.
The lawmen visited the place and investigated. This showed that the victim and his friend OS were sitting on their moped along the waterfront. At some point, Shayiet decided to enter the water for a swim. He was carried away by the current and in the middle of the river the young man disappeared into the depths.
The friend raised the alarm, after which the Surinamese police and the family launched a search (photo) without the desired result. His body was finally recovered today.
Saramacca District Commissioner, Mrs. Sherin Bansi-Durga expresses condolences to the entire family for their loss and wishes them a lot of strength in these dark days.
