Authorities in Pennsylvania‌ believe they have recovered the body of a woman who ⁤vanished four days earlier near a sinkhole above ‍a former coal mine.

Westmoreland County Deputy Coroner Sean Hribal stated that searchers believe they have located the remains of 64-year-old Elizabeth Pollard. A coroner was dispatched to Unity Township shortly after 11 a.m. ⁣Friday, where crews had been excavating the abandoned mine in a desperate attempt to ⁣find Ms. Pollard.

“We were running out of options, ‍time and resources,” Pennsylvania state Police Trooper Steve limani told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. ⁤“I was getting worried⁣ we weren’t gonna find her.”

Axel Hayes, Ms. Pollard’s son, said in a brief phone⁤ interview on Friday⁣ that he had not yet been contacted by authorities and planned to call his father, Kenny Pollard, to share the news.

Elizabeth Pollard was last seen Monday evening searching for her cat, Pepper, near⁣ a restaurant about⁣ half a ⁢mile from her home. Her family reported ‌her missing around 1 a.m. Tuesday as ⁢temperatures in the area plummeted below freezing.

The search ⁤centered on a sinkhole with a manhole-sized opening that may have recently appeared in the village of Marguerite, above a‌ coal mine that ceased operations roughly 70 years ago.

Police discovered ⁤Ms. Pollard’s car parked approximately 20‌ feet from the sinkhole. Her five-year-old granddaughter⁤ was found safe inside ‌the vehicle.

Hunters and restaurant employees in the area during the hours before Ms. Pollard’s ⁤disappearance reported not noticing the⁢ sinkhole.

In an effort to locate Ms. Pollard, authorities lowered a pole camera equipped with a sensitive listening device into ⁤the hole, but it failed to detect anything. Crews ⁣then removed a significant amount of soil⁤ and rock to reach the area where they believed she had fallen into the⁤ 30-foot chasm.
