The harvest at Bodegas San José de Tomelloso has crossed its equator. With the red they started on September 6 and a week later they did it with the white varieties. Its president, Esteban Lomas, assures that “the harvest will have more decline than expected. We estimate that we will have between 25 and 30 percent less and we are confirming the data because our partners are harvesting faster. For the Virgen del Pilar there will be very little left ”.
Of the 21 million kilos last year, it could be over 18 million this year. “In addition, the grade is also being low, oscillating between 9.5 and 10.5, in irrigated farms. In some it can be reached 11, but they are more sporadic cases. In any case, the sanitary state of the grapes is very good and will allow the production of excellent quality wines ”, he explains.
San José Bodegas, was created in 1963 by a small group of winegrowers convinced of the need to create a large winery that produces wines with a high quality standard. Currently, it has more than 160 members with more than 2,600 hectares of the Airén, Tempranillo and Macabeo varieties, made up of 50% irrigated and 50% rainfed.
Since its inception, the winery has invested in the renovation of its facilities and equipment to ensure an adequate production, maintenance and bottling process with the aim of obtaining quality within quantity.
It currently has the most innovative technologies. The existing stainless steel tanks and the 106 epoxy resin-coated concrete tanks allow the storage and maintenance of an average of 25 million kilos of grapes. Its brands Arenys and La Veredilla continue to gain a foothold in the markets.
