The Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano sent to Prime Minister Giorgia Melons a letter in which he communicates to the Prime Minister his “irrevocable resignation” following the scandal that broke out over the figure of Maria Rosaria Bowl.
“After long meditation, in painful days full of hatred towards me by a certain political media system, I have decided to irrevocably resign as Minister of Culture. I thank you for having defended me with determination, for having already rejected a first request for resignation and for the affection that you have once again shown me. But I believe it is necessary for the institutions and for myself to resign”, he wrote Sangiuliano in the letter sent to the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni. “As you recently recalled, we are doing great things, and I say this as a political and human community to which I feel I belong. I am proud of the results achieved in cultural policies in these almost two years of Government. Starting from having put an end to the typically Italian shame of museums and cultural sites being closed during the holidays, having increased in just one year the number of visitors to museums (up 22 percent) and their takings (up 33 percent). In December, Palazzo Citterio will open in Milan, purchased by the ministry in the early 1970s and then left unused for decades. Major projects are well underway, such as the former Albergo dei Poveri in Naples, the expansion of the Uffizi into other locations, and the investment in the Venice Biennale. For the first time in Italy, major exhibitions have been organized on authors and historical figures that the left had ignored for ideological reasons. I am also aware that I have touched a sensitive nerve and have attracted a lot of enmity by choosing to review the system of contributions to cinema by seeking greater efficiency and less waste. This work cannot be tainted and above all stopped by questions of gossip. Institutions are too high a value and must not be subject to the reasons of individuals. I need personal peace of mind, to be close to my wife whom I love, but above all to have a free hand to act in all legal venues against those who have caused me this damage, starting with an imminent complaint to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which I intend to present. My honorability is at stake here and I consider it important to be able to act to demonstrate my absolute transparency and correctness, without involving the Government. Never has a single euro from the Ministry been spent on improper activities. I have said it and I will demonstrate it in every venue. Not only that. I will get to the bottom of it to verify whether different interests have contributed to the affair and I will act against those who have published fake news in recent days”, he concludes. Sangiuliano.
