Boccia case, Meloni does not dump Sangiuliano for now: “The minister reassured me, no euro spent on her”

Georgia Melonifor now, it does not download Gennaro SangiulianoThe minister at the centre of an embarrassing case involving his alleged assistant at the ministry, Mary Rosaria Bocciafor the moment receives reassurances from the Prime Minister: “I have spoken with Minister Sangiuliano, especially regarding the issues that concern the government’s profile – explains Meloni interviewed by Paul Del Debbio on Rete 4 – and he tells me that he had actually considered the possibility of giving this person an unpaid collaboration assignment, then he made a different choice, he decided not to give that collaboration assignment to clarify some issues. He assures me that this person has not had access to any confidential documents, particularly regarding the G7 and above all he assures me that not a single euro of Italian or public money has been spent on this person. And these are the things that interest me for government profiles, then I leave the gossip to others because I don’t feel I have to comment on it”.

“I didn’t disappear”

In her first interview after the holidays, the Prime Minister also returned to the controversies that accompanied her trip to Puglia and her “disappearance” for over three days from the journalists’ radar: “Next time – she smiled – I will ask for advice from Elly Schleinwho was much better than me, disappeared for three weeks and no one knows where she was. They knew what I ate, what time I had my coffee. But my responsibility should never be questioned. I don’t go on vacation abroad, I don’t go far away exactly for this, to always be reachable, to always be available. That’s what I did this year too. Then, that I don’t want to communicate to some members of the opposition, or to the paparazzi, as if I had an electronic bracelet, seems to me the most natural thing in the world. I think everyone has the right to a bit of privacy. Otherwise I would have been a contestant on Big Brother, but I had another job in life”.

The occupation

He does not spare emphasis, however, when he comments on the employment data: “We are used to an Italy that was always at the bottom of the European and macroeconomic rankings, now Italy is growing more than France and Germany. Now we have the highest employment rate since Garibaldi unified Italy. Much of the credit for this goes to businesses, and the government is trying to help them by restoring authority to the country and with serious economic policies. We had few resources, we concentrated them on a few important things”.

The maneuver and pensions

During the interview, the maneuver is also discussed, the next obstacle for the government: “The issue is that we had few resources, we concentrated them on a few truly important things. Enough with the indiscriminate bonuses, enough with money thrown out the window. For us, it was important to help companies that hired, help companies that hired, help workers’ wages, family incomes, citizens’ health. These were the priorities, these were the issues on which we put money, also in terms of tax cuts, and these are the matters on which we will also put resources in this budget law”. On the pensions chapter, the prime minister responds as follows: “Minimum pensions are one of our priorities. In general, I would say, low pensions. In these two years we have worked for a full revaluation of all pensions that went up to 2,270 euros, ensuring that they were fully adjusted to the cost of living, but we have made a 120% revaluation for minimum pensions, which have grown significantly. We did it by increasing pensions that were very high, a fair job in my opinion, which we will continue to do because these people are certainly the ones who need the most help from the State”.

The Autonomy

She tries to distance herself from the controversy over differentiated autonomy, which is not only targeted by the opposition but also harshly criticized by bishops and which raises doubts even within the majority (see the entry “Forza Italia”): “Differentiated autonomy is not a law that this government is introducing – Meloni recalls – It has existed for 23 years since the reform of Title V made by the left-wing government. We regulate this principle introduced by them and we regulate it precisely to ensure that when autonomy is implemented, in no way can it happen that this creates an inequality, a difference, a gap between some regions and others – she added – How do we do it? The premise for the introduction of differentiated autonomy wanted by this government is something called essential levels of performance”.

Voting in Liguria

With regard to the Liguria issue, the region that – after the resignation of Giovanni Toti who ended up under house arrest – will go to vote at the end of October, Meloni assures that the center-right is “very compact”. And this despite the fact that with less than 60 days to go until the polls, there is still no convergence on the name to present: “We are working on the candidate for Liguria, the elections were not scheduled so we need more time but we will find a candidate who will carry on the excellent work done up to now”, underlines the prime minister.

News stories, from Sharon Verzeni to Paderno Dugnano

Finally, the Prime Minister also intervenes on the news stories of the last few days, the murder of Sharon Verzeni and the massacre in the family in Paderno Dugnano: “Security is my priority for this season. I think we can do more. The issue of immigration is an issue, we need to work on this effectively and the decrease in landings helps. However, this is an even more frightening fact, I am shocked by what Sharon’s alleged murderer said. Here we are talking about an Italian citizen who lacks nothing and is integrated. It is a situation similar to that of the 17-year-old boy we learned about yesterday, who killed his entire family. As a mother, you raise a child, you put all the love you have and you do everything to keep him safe and then the boy kills you, his father and his little brother, it is beyond imagination. I was speechless especially for a brother who kills his younger brother, in the shoes of a mother it is a frightening thing. This is a domino that we must address with a serious debate, I think we have not understood what is happening to the new generations, with new technologies, with the lockdown for covid, we are not equipped for this digital dependence”.
