Bocagrande Tourist Workers Protest Alleged Non-Compliance in Coastal Protection Megaproject

For this Wednesday, January 31, Bocagrande tourist officials scheduled a new protest for alleged non-compliance within the framework of the Coastal Protection megaproject. According to the actors on beaches 4 and 5, they are currently owed two months of financial compensation.

Likewise, they denounce that Beach 5, the first spa created by the project, has not been delivered in its entirety. “They only gave the beach to the carperos, when the tourist workers are hairdressers, masseuses, artisans, sellers of various merchandise and water shoes,” said Eber Luis García, one of the affected tourist workers.

The demonstration will start at 8 am in Bocagrande, where the project works are taking place. The tourist servers also denounce that for that day – January 31 – a meeting is scheduled in which entities such as Valorization, Risk Management, the Ombudsman’s Office and the Attorney General’s Office will participate, however they assured that they were not invited.

“We want to attend because we want to know how the Coastal Protection project is going,” said García.

The Coastal Protection megaproject seeks to mitigate erosion on the city’s coastal edge. It includes the construction of spurs, breakwaters, longitudinal breakwater, storm drainage system, marginal protection and hydraulic fills for the formation of new beaches.

Work began in December 2021.
