Boca Juniors Defeat, Attack Atlético Mineiro’s dressing room

The commotion after the last 16 match 16 Liberators cup Among Atletico Mineiro vs Boca Juniors. The visitors, who were eventually eliminated, felt cheated by the referee.

Taking place at Estádio Mineirão, Wednesday (21/7/2021) morning WIB, the match has been running hot since normal time. A Boca Juniors goal in the second half through Marcelo Weigandt was disallowed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) even though the visitors felt the goal was legal.

A commotion ensued on the pitch, resulting in the assistant coaches from each club being sent off as well. But the peak of the dispute occurred after the match.

This match had to be settled on penalties after it ended in a goalless draw. In the first leg a week earlier in Buenos Aires, the match also ended in a 0-0 draw.

Atletico Mineiro finally came out victorious through the score 3-1. Ignacio Fernandez, Junior Alonso and Everson managed to complete the penalty well, while in the stronghold Boca Juniors, only Marcos Rojo who scored a goal.

Boca Juniors who from the beginning were dissatisfied with the decision of referee Esteban Ostojich felt the referee was in favor of Atletico Mineiro. They then attacked Mineiro’s dressing room to confront the referee who was sheltering there.

Police officers at the stadium reacted. ESPN reported that police fired tear gas at the Boca Juniors players.

Reported by Sportbible, eight people Boca Juniors also detained by the police, consisting of players and staff, but not named. The Argentine ambassador in Belo Horizonte stepped in to help free the detained Boca Juniors delegates.

This incident is expected to result in penalties for both teams. Boca Juniors midfielder Diego Gonzalez believes his team lost because of the referee’s one-sided leadership.

“No doubt, everyone can see that. We scored a good goal, and in fact we should have won the first game too. It hurts a lot, we feel bad. CONMEBOL have to improve the performance of the referee,” he said, quoted by ESPN.
