Bobi is the oldest dog in the world. He is 31 years old and already lives twice as long as is usual for his Rafeiro do Alentejo breed. It is a purebred breed intended for guarding farm animals, whose average lifespan is 12 to 14 years.

Born on May 11, 1992, Bobi has lived his whole life with the Costa family in the village of Conqueiros in Leiria, central Portugal. Bobi’s owner Leonal Costa is only seven years older than his pet.
Costa attributes Bobi’s amazing longevity to the “calm and peaceful environment” he lives in, his diet of human food, and his free life. It is said that Bobi was never chained or leashed. Bobi’s owners first soak the food in water to remove the spices.
According to the Daily Mail, good old health seems to be in his genes too, as according to Mr Costa, Bobi’s mother Gira lived to be 18 and another of their dogs, Chicote, lived to be 22.
In addition, Bobi miraculously avoided being euthanized when he was still a puppy. He was born together with three siblings to a family in Portugal. She already had many animals and had to euthanize the puppies. But Bobi ran away and the Costa family kept him.
