English football legend Bobby Charlton has died aged 86.

England football is mourning the loss of one of its greatest legends. The former Manchester United idol Bobby Charlton died at the age of 86. His long-standing club announced this on Saturday. With the English national team, the offensive man was world champion in his own country in 1966. He scored 49 goals in 106 international matches.

Football idol remembered as a “giant of the game”.

With Manchester United, Charlton won the league title in 1968 and the league title three times. In 758 games for the club, the all-time great scored 249 goals. After his playing career, the former world-class footballer served as director of Manchester United for 39 years. “Sir Bobby will always be remembered as a giant of the game,” said the obituary on the club website.

Sir Robert “Bobby” Charlton was born on October 11, 1937 in Ashington, Northumberland. The English footballer was part of the World Cup winning team that won the title on home soil in 1966. He was almost exclusively active for Manchester United. Charlton made his debut in Manchester United’s professional team as early as 1956 and earned a regular place in the following two seasons. During this time he was one of the survivors of the plane disaster that killed eight of his teammates in Munich in 1958. Bobby Charlton became world famous for his long-range goals.
