They met twenty years ago on New Year’s Day when Michiel taps Bob on the shoulders in a bar. It turns out to be love at first sight between the architect and the history teacher. “He corrects me when I’m too impatient with others. And he puts the brakes on if I also plan work weekends too many times in a row,” says Bob about his beloved with whom he likes to retire to their holiday home in Spain.

After Michiel moves in with Bob and after eleven years ‘everything’ is still in the name of Mr Sikkes, according to the contractor it is time to get married. Despite the fact that the men get married on the ‘dullest day of the year’ – read: Monday 2 January – at 9 am, the drizzle should not spoil the fun. “Nevertheless it was an incredibly beautiful day”, Bob looks back. “We had prepared lunch for 33 friends at a long table in our living room that lasted from one in the afternoon until one at night. Great.”
