Bob Marley: One Love Biopic Dominates Box Office with $44M Opening

In a stunning display of love and admiration for the reggae legend, Bob Marley: One Love has taken the box office by storm, raking in an impressive $44 million in its opening week. The Paramount-produced music biopic has captured the hearts of millions, propelling it to the top spot at the box office.

Friday afternoon saw Bob Marley: One Love bring in a staggering $6.7 million, setting the stage for a successful weekend. With a projected $22 million for the three-day weekend and $26.2 million for the four-day weekend, this $70 million production has proven to be a hit among audiences. Screened in 3,539 theaters across the country, the film has resonated with fans far and wide.

Not far behind is Sony/Marvel’s Madame Web, which premiered in 4,013 theaters. Despite a solid start with a $3.8 million Friday, the film is expected to earn $12-13 million for the three-day weekend and $14 million for the four-day weekend, accumulating a total of $22.2 million over six days.

Apple Originals Films’ Argylle, distributed by Universal, made its mark with a $1.1 million Friday. Although experiencing a 33% decline from the previous week, the film is projected to earn $4.2 million for the three-day weekend and $5 million for the four-day weekend. By the end of Monday, Argylle is expected to have a running total of $36.7 million.

Surprising many industry insiders, Illumination/Universal’s Migration has managed to hold its own in its ninth weekend. The animated film, which was initially met with skepticism, is set to earn $5 million for the four-day weekend, bringing its total earnings to an impressive $116 million.

Warner Bros.’ Wonka continues to captivate audiences, earning $850,000 on Friday. With a projected $3.6 million for the three-day weekend and $4.5 million for the four-day weekend, the film’s total earnings are nearing $211 million.

Outside of the top five, Fathom Event’s Chosen, season 4, episodes 4-6, made a respectable $950,000 on Friday. The film is expected to earn $3.3 million for the three-day weekend and $3.8 million for the four-day weekend, accumulating a total of $4.5 million.

On Friday morning, Bob Marley: One Love brought in an impressive $3.85 million, despite a 73% decline from its record-breaking opening day. With a projected six-day opening of $35-38 million, the Reinaldo Marcus Green-directed biopic is poised to make a significant impact at the box office.

Bob Marley’s influence is evident in the film’s widespread release across 3,536 theaters, including numerous premium large format screens.

Meanwhile, Madame Web experienced a decline in ticket sales, earning $2.15 million on Thursday. With a two-day total of $8.2 million, the film is still aiming to reach $20 million. However, audience scores have been less than favorable, with only two stars on PostTrak and a 58% approval rating from general audiences. Surprisingly, parents and children under 12 gave the film 4½ stars, showcasing a divide in opinions.

Social media analytics company RelishMix has observed a lack of excitement surrounding Madame Web. Critics have cited “superhero fatigue” as a reason for the film’s lukewarm reception. Some have expressed confusion over Dakota Johnson’s casting and the deviation from the character’s portrayal in the comics. Additionally, the film has been unfavorably compared to Sony’s other Spider-Man-related film, Morbius, with many feeling that the scale of Madame Web is smaller in comparison.

Despite the star power of Sydney Sweeney, who boasts nearly 20 million followers on social media, Madame Web’s online presence falls 44% behind other superhero movies. While it surpasses Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’s reach of 334.3 million, it falls short of The Marvels’ 600 million reach.

In third place on Thursday was Fathom Events’ The Chosen Season 4, episodes 4-6, which earned $777,000 across 2,216 theaters. This is in addition to the success of Season 4 episodes 1-3, which have already grossed over $14 million.

Apple Original Films’ Argylle experienced a decline in ticket sales, earning $450,000 on Friday. With a running total of $9.4 million at the end of its second week, the film is projected to reach $31.7 million.
