The film is scheduled in Mende and Saint-Chély-d’Apcher.
Bob Marley, this hero, this demi-God, this genius, this model: this is in essence the discourse, nuanced as you will recognize, that the biopic conveys Bob Marley : one love, blissful hagiography of the most famous reggae singer of all time. It is true that if you are an inveterate fan of his music and of the man, you will find in this film a wealth of information on his life, from his poor childhood in Jamaica to absolute glory, including his beliefs to Rastafarianism, his tumultuous loves, his fight for peace and his relationship with drugs.
Music… ruled out!
The actor is quite good, the reconstruction of the period is successful, the film is not short on drama and twists and turns while remaining in the authenticity of this extraordinary life. Even the hero’s gray areas are not completely obscured (his relationship with women and his mysticism which passes for indoctrination), in short we could be happy with this certainly clipesque but instructive work.
Only one element is missing: music. Which, for the biography of a musician, is a bit of a shame. Never are the importance of music in Marley’s life mentioned, nor the substance of what makes reggae, nor the difficulties of creation. The hits parade like advertising spots without soul, without reference, without context. And as a result, we miss the real interest of the enterprise: understanding how reggae was crucial at a time in the history of music, and how this artist, precisely, gave it his soul . No music, no cry…
