NEW YORK – A family had to be rescued after their boat burst into flames and sank off Kings Point, Long Island, local officials said.
The parents and a 5-year-old girl were thrown from the 22-foot-long boat by the explosion, Great Neck Fire Department Chief John Purcell said. All three were rushed to nearby hospitals.
Two teenagers who were also aboard the boat at the time jumped into the water after the explosion and were picked up by a good Samaritan and brought to shore, Purcell said. Another boy, who was traveling on a jet ski, was uninjured and returned to shore under his own power.
One of the teens suffered minor burns and the 5-year-old girl may have multiple broken bones, authorities said.
The extent of all the blast-related injuries is not fully known, but all were being treated in hospitals on Friday night.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
