At midday, a boat caught fire not far from the shore of Argelès-su-Mer beach on Wednesday August 9. Several passengers were rescued before the boat ran aground on the beach.
A scene that many vacationers are not about to forget. Around noon, this Wednesday August 9, in the 300-meter zone which borders the shore of the beach of Argelès-sur-Mer, a boat on fire entered the summer decor of the beach attendants.
“On the edge”
The boat, near the mouth of the Tech bocal and facing the Mas Larrieu nature reserve, suddenly caught fire for reasons that remain unknown for the time being. The flames and thick black smoke were preceded by a ‘thud’ which was said to have sounded shortly before, the newspaper says The Independent.
The first elements indicate that three people were on board the boat when the fire broke out. The passengers in danger would have thrown themselves into the water before being rescued “in extremis” by other navigators who were close to the incident, explains the daily.
The boat then burst into flames. The images taken by beach attendants who came to enjoy the sun caused significant damage to the boat. The latter began to drift, all in flames, to the beach and ended up stranding on the sand.
A dozen firefighters mobilized
No fewer than ten firefighters were rushed to the scene to put out the blaze. The difficulties of access to the site for the firefighters required the installation of a system of motor pumps in order to recover the water from the sea, although the fire no longer represented any risk of spreading.
According to L’Indépendant, at 1:30 p.m., the operation was still at the start of the afternoon, without any injuries to be deplored.
