Four people on board a boat drowned in Italy’s Lago Maggiore on Sunday. The vessel on which they were celebrating a birthday capsized and they ended up in the water. Twenty people were able to swim ashore on their own or were rescued by the Coast Guard.
The boat capsized off the coast of Lisanza, a town in the province of Varese, around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.
There were more than twenty partygoers and two crew members on the boat of more than 16 meters. According to the newspaper Daily Mirror are the passengers on board British tourists. Boats, divers and helicopters were used in the rescue. Five people have been taken to a hospital.
Attilio Fontana, governor of the Lombardy region, says the accident was caused by a whirlwind. He speaks of a “very serious accident”.
