Boat accident – – Centimeters away from fatal accident

– Dad, Dad, you have to come and save me. I’m drowning.

It was around 23.15 on Friday night when Rune Larsen received the dramatic phone call. The 18-year-old son is calling. He had visited his girlfriend on the other side of the fjord, while his father lived in a cabin on an island outside Lillesand.

– I was probably so panicked, but since he called I knew he was not seriously injured. I hoisted our ribs to run out to save him, but luckily some other cabin dwellers had picked him up. He had only received a few small cuts, says Larsen to Dagbladet.

The son is familiar with the discussion of the case.

Ran away

According to the father, the son’s inflatable boat was hit by another rib that came from Lillesand. It must then have thundered into the son’s boat, and tore off the engine.

It was The Friend of the Fatherland who first mentioned the incident.

– They saw my son just right in the islands. Then they drove on, which is a rock wrong, he claims.

– It was quite dark outside when the incident took place. Did the rubber boat have the lantern?

– Yes, it had.

– Many who do not show consideration

Despite the dramatic collision, Larsen is not very surprised.

– I was surprised there and then, but there are many who do not show consideration for the fjord now. If you ask me, there are more people in boats than boat people who are at sea during the day.

The incident has not yet been reported to the police.

– We will find the sinner first.

However, the danger is quite clear that it could have ended much worse if the point of contact between the boats had been a little different.

Had the ribs run five centimeters to the right, it would have run all over the boy. Then it would have been a fatal accident.

– Rarely

To NTB, the police in Agder confirm that there is a lot of traffic at sea this year, also compared to the record year last year.

The four lifeboats along the Agder coast have so far this summer had 227 missions in the period 1 July to 20 July, compared to 190 missions in the same period last year.

The media guard in the Rescue Company, Tanja Krangnes, tells Dagbladet that they did not move out in connection with this incident.

– Fortunately, it is very rare that we experience such incidents. We encourage everyone at sea to look up and show consideration for others. It is especially important to adapt the speed to smaller vessels such as inflatable boats, kayaks and SUP boards.

At the same time, Krangnes asks all boat owners to help if something should happen.

– Then it is important to assist.
