Boakye: Beitar Jerusalem take over former Juventus striker

The 28-year-old transferred to Israel’s elite division after stint in Poland

High-flying Israeli club Beitar Jerusalem have announced the signing of Ghanaian international Richmond Boakye-Yiadom.

The forward joins the Capital Lions on a one-year contract, with a one-year extension option.

Last season he was on the books of Poland’s Gornik Zabrze for the second half of the campaign where his short-term contract expired.

“Beitar Jerusalem are pleased to announce the signing of attacking forward Richmond Boachi (28, 1.86cm), who has signed with the team for one season with an option for another season,” announced the Beitar on his official site.

“The striker, who made 14 appearances for the [Ghana] senior team, has an impressive resume and has gone through some very important knots in his career.

“He has already played in Italy (bought by Juventus, played in Sassuolo, Genoa, Latina and Atalanta), in Spain (Elche), in the Netherlands (Roda JC), in Serbia (Red Star of Belgrade), in China (Jiangsu Suning) and Poland (Gornik Zabrze), with total transfer fees crossing the € 16 million mark.

“The player, who is currently in Ghana, is expected to join the club in Israel and will be part of our yellow and black army, which will begin his journey next Saturday in the Toto Cup match against Hapoel Jerusalem at Teddy Stadium.”

In the Polish team, he made 13 league appearances, without finding the back of the net in any of the matches.

In the first half of the term, he made eight league appearances for Red Star Belgrade, scoring twice.

Boakye is hoping to make the most of his time with Beitar to impress Ghanaian coach CK Akonnor for a return to national duty.

His name was last found on a Ghana squad roster in March last year when a selection was announced for a double-sided in Sudan, a series of matches which were later postponed due to of the coronavirus epidemic at the time.

The Black Stars’ next squad is expected to be revealed ahead of their 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia and South Africa in September.
