The Nobel Prize in Medicine or Psychology was awarded in 2020 to American and British virologists Harvey James Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles Moen Rice for discovering the hepatitis C virus.
Opening of the Week of Statements for Nobel Laureates 2020, Monday, October 5, the Nobel Council of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden stated in a press releasethat the findings of these virologists in the study of human seed once allowed to identify a new virus – hepatitis C virus.
“Before their work, the detection of hepatitis A and B viruses was a decisive step forward, but most cases of blood-borne hepatitis remained unexplained. The discovery of the hepatitis C virus shed light on the cause of the remaining cases of chronic hepatitis and made possible blood tests and drugs that have saved millions of lives, “the Nobel Council of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden said in a press release.
