BNB announced: Bulgaria’s external debt is growing – 2024-04-29 15:15:45

Almost €10.8 billion is the gross external debt of the “General Government” sector at the end of February 2024. This represents 10.7% of the estimated gross domestic product – GDP. The information is from the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB). Debt increased by €781.3 million compared to the end of February 2023.

Bulgaria’s gross foreign debt at the end of February 2024 amounted to just over 44.4 billion euros (43.9 percent of GDP). This is almost EUR 161 million (0.4 percent) more than at the end of February 2023 (EUR 44,257 million, 47.1 percent of GDP), BTA specified.

At the end of February, short-term liabilities were over 7.3 billion euros (16.5 percent of gross debt, 7.2 percent of GDP) and decreased for the year by 803.1 million euros (9.9 percent ). Long-term liabilities amount to nearly €37.1 billion (83.5 percent of gross debt, 36.6 percent of GDP), rising by €964.1 million (2.7 percent) in one year .

The external liabilities of the central bank are almost EUR 1.918 billion (1.9 percent of GDP). They decreased in one year by 73.8 million euros (3.7 percent). The external liabilities of other monetary financial institutions are almost EUR 6.113 billion (6 percent of GDP), decreasing for a year by EUR 382.5 million (5.9 percent).

According to the BNB:

The external liabilities of “Other sectors” are slightly over 12 billion euros (11.9 percent of GDP). They decrease on an annual basis by 216 million euros (1.8 percent). Intra-company lending amounted to EUR 13.546 billion (13.4 percent of GDP), which is EUR 51.9 million (0.4 percent) more than at the end of February 2023 (EUR 13,494.3 million , 14.4 percent of GDP). It, as always, has the most significant share in the external debt structure – 30.5 percent at the end of February 2024 and maintains its share compared to a year earlier.
