BMW’s Resistance to Abandoning Internal Combustion Engines and their Roadmap for Electrification

The German car manufacturer BMW is to some extent resisting the automotive industry’s tendency to abandon internal combustion engines – it is no secret that they are developing new systems for electric cars and also hydrogen machines, but BMW specialists, unlike many others, are preparing a new generation of internal combustion engines.

There have already been rumors that BMW is developing new four-cylinder, six-cylinder and also V8 engines that will meet the latest European emission requirements. According to the latest information, BMW intends that these new engines will be in production well into the next decade, but they will mainly be used in BMW crossovers.

Frank Weber, a member of the car manufacturer’s board, has emphasized that BMW does not plan to set a specific deadline when the internal combustion engines will be abandoned. Representatives of Audi and Mercedes, which are two of BMW’s fiercest competitors, have announced their plans and schedule, how and when to abandon internal combustion engines, a long time ago. Mercedes will give them up in 2030, Audi another three years later. Bavarians believe that in the future, electric cars and regular cars will coexist, giving customers the opportunity to choose the most suitable solution for them.

“We have developed a flexible powertrain strategy. People don’t have to choose the most suitable power unit and then see what model they can get. The customer simply chooses the power unit he wants and can buy whatever model he wants, for example, the 5 Series,” says Weber. The aforementioned 5 Series is an example of BMW’s flexibility – you can buy a regular 5 Series with an internal combustion engine, but if you want, you can also get an electric i5. Also, the new Neue Klasse platform is being built with the idea that the cars created on it can be equipped with an internal combustion engine.

Returning to electrification, BMW’s strategy calls for about half of the cars sold to be fully electric in 2030, but by keeping the internal combustion engine, BMW makes itself more attractive to an even wider range of customers. The chairman of the manufacturer’s board, Olivers Cipse, has repeatedly stated that there are many regions in the world that are not ready to switch to electric cars and will not be ready for it for a long time, so completely neglecting internal combustion engines, in his opinion, would not be the right step.
