Car manufacturer BMW is working with an experimental battery that can increase the autonomy of its electric models to 1000 km.

With an autonomy of more than 600 kilometers (by WLTP standards), the BMW iX already among the best performing car models in this field, but there is always room for improvement. The German car maker confirms to Reuters that they are going to conduct a test with a battery produced by the American startup ONE, who want to specialize in increasing the autonomy of electric cars. For the test, a prototype of the electric SUV will be designed with ONE’s Gemini battery.

The battery consists of two parts and, thanks to advanced chemistry, could store more energy than current car batteries. Part of the battery charges the LFP cells to increase the range. The battery capacity is more than 200 kWh, but due to a high energy density, they should not take up too much space under the hood. In addition, the battery is also made of more durable materials. ONE claims to minimize the use of controversial raw materials such as cobalt. In time, ONE wants to offer its batteries for commercial sale to car manufacturers.

1.419 kilometer

ONE’s Gemini batteries are a long way from that; they first have to prove themselves in practice. But the first test results do sound promising. In January Tesla conducted tests with a converted Model S. On the rollers, it achieved an autonomy of 1,419 kilometers at a constant speed of 90 km/h and on the road ONE managed to reach 1,210 kilometers. On its regular battery, the ‘Long Range’ edition of the Tesla Model 2 achieves an autonomy of about 585 kilometers in practice.

These tests were of course conducted in optimized conditions, although ONE is convinced that an autonomy of 950-1000 kilometers should certainly be possible in realistic conditions. More experiments are needed to demonstrate this. As one of the main investors in the startup, BMW is now putting the batteries to the test. With a maximum range of 832 kilometers, the Lucid Air can still call itself the autonomy king among electric cars.
