Range is constantly perceived as one of the most important criteria of electric cars, but BMW focuses on developments in several areas.

Range on a single charge, immediately after the price, is often one of the most frequently solved parameters in new electric cars. No wonder, then, that many automakers are trying to invest heavily in technologies that will allow them to offer a range of over 1,000 kilometers. But BMW is not one of these carmakers.
„The mileage of a thousand kilometers is not the goal we have set for our electric cars,Said David Ferrufino, BMW i4 project leader, in an interview with Australian colleagues at WhichCar. “We aim for 600 kilometers for fully electric cars and 100 kilometers for plug-in hybrids for everyday driving,” added.

The Munich carmaker believes that the development of other technologies also facilitates long-distance journeys by electric car. “We are not only making progress in battery technology, but also in the public charger network – which is growing very fast. So going on a journey across Europe from Norway to Italy in an electric car is already a joyous experience,“Ferrufino told WhichCar.
For example, the new BMW i4, which offers a purely electric range of 590 kilometers, for example, benefits from the support of fast charging with an output of up to 200 kW. It should take about 31 minutes to replenish the battery from 10 to 80% and the car can continue. It does not give a 1000 km long journey in one go, but with a short break, which the driver will probably appreciate on a similarly long route.

In addition, Ferrufino specified that the maximum range of purely electric BMW models will also depend on the segment. “For example, we don’t think a range of 600 kilometers would be suitable for the BMW i3 as a city car, but when it comes to the BMW iX or i4, then a range of around 600 km is a very ‘customer-friendly’ solution.“
The BMW representative then summed up the brand’s strategy simply: “So you have two things: batteries, which are making more and more progress, but also charging speed and infrastructure, which is also taking big steps forward,“Ferrufino concluded.
