BMW plans to triple the number of employees for electric car drives | Industry News automobile

In the current year alone, the number will be increased to more than 1,400, mainly through internal relocations, but also through new hires. “We are currently looking for specialists for the future technology of e-mobility on the market,” said Michael Nikolaides, head of BMW drive production.

In the industry, savings rounds at several companies are causing concern about permanent job losses as a result of the switch from combustion engines to electric motors. At BMW, however, according to the group, its own added value share for electric motors is higher than for cars with internal combustion engines. The carmaker has stated that the dismantling and creation of jobs in different areas should be balanced. The announcement by the US electric car manufacturer Tesla to stomp a plant near Berlin has raised hopes of numerous new jobs in the region.

BMW currently employs a total of 18,000 people and 800 trainees in Dingolfing. Several BMW models and various vehicle components are produced at the location between Munich, Regensburg and Passau. In addition, Dingolfing is the most important supplier for batteries and electric motors at production sites all over the world. According to the company, almost all BMW and mini vehicles with electric drives contain components from Dingolfing.

So far, BMW has relied heavily on SUVs that consume petrol, but it also wants to achieve the stricter CO2 limits in Europe by increasing sales of electric cars. The proportion of cars with purely electric drives and hybrid vehicles should increase to a quarter in Europe by 2021 and to half by 2030. Across the Group, wagons with electric drives only accounted for 5.8 percent of the sales volume last year. (Apa / Reuters)
