German automaker BMW is currently testing the upcoming M5 Touring version, which should go to customers next year. The car was recorded in tests on the Nürburgring track and the return of the M5 Touring version is expected – previously the M5 with a station wagon body was available for sale in 2010 for the E60/61 generation.
The Touring model is expected to arrive in dealerships at the same time as the regular M5. British media Autocar available information shows that the car will be equipped with a plug-in hybrid power unit system – the power of the internal combustion engine will be provided by a 4.4-liter V8 gasoline engine with two turbines, while the electric part will be taken care of by an electric motor placed on the rear axle. Sources close to the German automaker report that the system will develop about 800 horsepower.

The car was caught at the Nürburgring, but it is part of the test program – it is also tested in urban areas, on country roads and also on German autobahns around Munich. BMW reports that, compared to the previous M5, the new model will have a significantly revised chassis. The car will, of course, be equipped with the xDrive all-wheel drive system, but most of the power will be sent to the rear. For now, there is no more information on what kind of battery BMW plans to use to provide the electric motor and driving in electric mode only.
The 5 Series’ electric counterpart, the i5, isn’t predicted to lead to an electric M5, but the M division has interest in the zero-emissions sports sedan. It should be noted that the i5 M60 with 600 horsepower and 3.8 seconds to 100 km/h is in any case quite sporty, although not as brutal as a full-fledged M car.
As for the M5 Touring, this version has had a complicated history – the M5 Touring was originally offered for the second-generation E34 model. No such version was created for the next generation E39 and it is believed that this was done for financial reasons. The M5 Touring returned with the E60/61 generation, but was only sold in Europe and BMW only managed to sell 1,009 units. The following two generations of the 5 Series again did without the M5 Touring, but now this model will be back. Perhaps BMW is looking at the first-ever M3 Touring, which is so popular that BMW even has to ramp up production as planned production capacity is unable to meet demand for the M3 Touring.
