A fleet of vehicles that are fully operational will travel across Europe, and engineers, together with test pilots, will carry out all sorts of hydrogen propulsion tests. The whole process should prepare the “i Hydrogen Next” project for small series production at the end of 2022.

“Hydrogen fuel cell technology can be an attractive choice for a sustainable powertrain, especially in larger vehicle categories,” said BMW Development Board Member Frank Weber. “That’s why road testing of near-series hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is an important milestone in our research and development,” he added.

We have already informed about the system, which will have a hydrogen X5 under the hood. However, it is practically a redesigned electric drive from the smaller BMW iX3. Instead of lithium-ion batteries, however, the drive will consume energy from the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen.

Hydrogen is stored in two 700 bar composite tanks with a capacity of six kilograms. The combined power of the entire system is 374 horsepower, similar to the strongest six-cylinder petrol engine in the X5.
