BMW invests $ 1.7 billion in the United States

$ 1.7 billion is the amount that BMW is investing on the other side of the Atlantic in order to increase the production of electric vehicles there. A staggering budget that will be used in particular to expand the Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. On site, the sum of $ 1 billion will transform the current production site to convert it to the design of 100% electric vehicles.

In addition to this billion, approximately $ 700 million will be earmarked for the construction of a brand new high voltage battery assembly plant in Woodruff, a site also located in South Carolina. lithium will be built in collaboration with Envision AESC (a joint venture between Nissan, NEC and Tokin Corporation) and will have an annual production capacity of 30 GWh. The opening of this plant is scheduled for 2026.

The new battery format developed by Envision AESC on this occasion will show a 20% higher energy density than current batteries, which will allow to accelerate the charging speed by 30% and increase the autonomy in the same percentage. The German group’s stated goal is to ensure the production of at least six fully electric BMW X models in the United States by 2030.
