Leipzig. The number three has a special place in numerology. Attributes such as happiness, success, diversity and creativity are attributed to it. The BMW Group plant in Leipzig can now celebrate seven threes as a success: After the start of series production in 2005, the 3,333,333rd vehicle has now been built for a customer.
From the three vehicle models that the Leipzig plant is currently producing – BMW 1 Series, BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé and BMW 2 Series Active Tourer – one BMW 1 Series can be honored as a “Schnapszahl Jubilee”. It is a BMW 128ti* in the color Melbourne Red metallic with black accents. The sporty model with the striking exterior and interior features has been manufactured exclusively in Leipzig since last November. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology that delivers 195 kW (265 hp). The power pack also revives a long BMW tradition: the abbreviation “TI” – later “ti” – has stood for “Turismo Internazionale” since the 1960s and identifies particularly sporty models. Examples are the iconic BMW 1800 TI and BMW 2002 TI or BMW 323ti Compact and BMW 325ti Compact in the late 1990s.
The red compact sports car now leads the series of special anniversary vehicles from Leipzig: In March 2005, the first BMW “made in Leipzig” rolled off the assembly line, a BMW 320i. Six years later, in December 2011, the 1,000,000th vehicle was produced: a BMW 116d in Alpine White. The 2,000,000th vehicle in October 2016 was a BMW i3 in Protonic Blue and in 2021 a BMW M240i Convertible in Sunset Orange was celebrated as the 3,000,000th Leipzig BMW.
The next anniversary vehicle, the 4,000,000th, will be either a BMW or a MINI. Because before the end of this year, another member will enrich the Leipzig vehicle family: the new MINI Countryman. Leipzig will then be the first BMW Group plant in the world to manufacture BMW and MINI models.
With this, the Saxon plant is once again demonstrating its maximum flexibility. In future, four different models (BMW 1 Series, BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and MINI Countryman) and three drive types (combustion engine, plug-in hybrid and fully electric) will be assembled on one line.
To this end, the Leipzig plant has continuously expanded its production capacity since it opened 18 years ago. Up to 350,000 vehicles per year can be built at the Saxon site. For comparison: in the first year of production there were around 54,000 vehicles.
