BMW from Dingolfing is auctioned in New York

A BMW 850i xDrive is being auctioned off in New York today. The car was built in Dingolfing and is the last of a limited series. It was designed by world-renowned artist Jeff Koons.

Proceeds for a good cause

The Christie’s auction house in the Rockefeller Center in New York is auctioning the BMW today at 8.30 a.m. local time, which corresponds to 2.30 p.m. Central European Time. Proceeds will benefit a center for missing and exploited children in Alexandria, Virginia.

99 copies – all already sold

The vehicle built in Dingolfing in March is the last of a series limited to 99 units, in which each unit cost around 350,000 euros and was sold within a few days of the world premiere. The cars will be delivered from May.

Car decorated with comic

Christie’s quotes Jeff Koons on its website as saying: “My version of the 8-series BMW Gran Coupe is a dream come true. I’ve wanted to design my own version of a BMW for a long time”. The car is painted in eleven different colors in the style of a comic strip, which required 200 hours of manual work for each example.

Jeff Koons: most expensive artist in the world

Born in 1955 in York, Pennsylvania, in the US province, Jeff Koons lived in Munich for a long time and is considered the most expensive living artist in the world. His sculpture “Rabbit” was auctioned in May 2019 for 91 million US dollars – over 82 million euros.

As early as 2010, Koons had designed a BMW M3 that took part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Koons has also designed wine labels for the House of Rothschild and a cover for a Lady Gaga album.
