BMKG Issues Warning for Extreme Weather and Rainfall

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warns of the dangers of extreme weather with very heavy rainfall intensity.

A number of provinces, according to BMKG, have experienced heavy to extreme rain. These provinces are North Sumatra and Central Java on November 18 2023; then Tarempa Kep Riau on 19 November 2023 and West Kalimantan on 22 November 2023.

Meanwhile, BMKG revealed that there are atmospheric dynamics, namely the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) phenomenon, which is currently starting to enter western Indonesia and is predicted to continue to be active around Indonesia until the First Elementary period of December 2023.

“This can contribute to increasing the growth of rain clouds in Indonesia,” explained BMKG on Instagram @infobmkg, quoted on Sunday (26/11/2023).

Then, BMKG also detected the Equatorial Rossby (ER) Wave which was observed to be active in parts of Indonesia, especially in the central and eastern parts until the end of the First Period of November 2023.

Furthermore, BMKG also sees a strengthening of the Asian monsoon. This is indicated by the strengthening of upper layer winds from the South China Sea area to more than 25 knots or 47 km/hour.

BMKG also saw the presence of Tropical Cyclone 99W seeds in the North Natuna Sea and Cyclonic Circulation in west Sumatra and the Karimata Strait which triggered the formation of confluence and slowing winds.

“The 99W Tropical Cyclone Seed has a maximum wind speed of 20 knots (37 km/hour) and the air pressure at its center reaches 1006 hPa with the system moving towards the West,” wrote BMKG.

Positive sea level anomalies in the South China Sea, Karimata Strait, Java Sea, Makassar Strait and Sulawesi Sea up to 3 degrees Celsius are a source of water vapor in the formation of rain clouds.

BMKG also noted that a number of areas have the potential to experience coastal flooding or tidal flooding.

1. Sumatra

– North Sumatra Coast (Medan Belalwan, Medan Marelan and Medan Labuhan) 23 November – 1 December 2023
– Bandar Lampung Coast 27 November – 1 December 2023

2. Java

– West and south coast of Banten 26-30 November 2023
– North coast of Jakarta 26 November-2 December 2023
– Central Java Coast (Semarang City, Demak Regency, Pekalongan, Brebes, Tegal City, Tegal Regency, and Pemalang Regency) 19-23 November 2023

3. Maluku

– Maluku Coast (Ambon Bay, Saumlaki, Kai Islands, Dobo Islands, eastern Seram Regency) 25-30 November 2023.

BMKG reminded related parties to ensure that infrastructure capacity and water resource management systems are ready to anticipate increased rainfall.

Then, the regional government and the authorities should carry out environmental management by not throwing rubbish carelessly and not cutting slopes and cutting down trees uncontrolledly as well as carrying out a more massive reforestation program.

“Pruning fragile tree branches and twigs and strengthening stands/poles so they don’t collapse in strong winds,” said BMKG.

All parties are asked to intensify coordination, synergy and communication for preparedness to anticipate hydrometroreological disasters.
