BMKG differs from BRIN in forecasting severe storm in Greater Jakarta on December 28

Jakarta

BRIN climatology researcher Erma Yulihastin explained the potential for extreme rainfall up to devastating storms to occur on December 28, 2022 in the Greater Jakarta area. BMKG extension he also has a different prediction than Erma.

“The term hurricane, hurricane terminology is more or less a tropical cyclone, so a strong wind whirlwind that also causes extreme rainfall, is a hurricane. It was detected earlier in the northern region of Papua and is also ongoing, but the probability is said to be low in the southwest area of Indonesia, that’s what is meant by a real storm,” BMKG chief Dwikorita Karnawati said during a news conference viewed on BMKG’s YouTube on Tuesday ( 12/27/2022) .

According to Dwikorita, the BMKG forecasts that the Greater Jakarta area will indeed experience extreme rainfall but not storms. Extreme rain is also expected to occur on December 30, 2022.

“Extreme rain must not be a hurricane, and extreme rain is expected, starting…so the trend has been seen since Dec. 21 and the trend is increasing on (on) the 29th, so it is heavy rain, not a whirlwind,” the term hurricane is whirling, swirling, and accompanied by heavy rain. If Jabodetabek is December 28, there is no redness yet, which is worrying for Central Java and the Java Sea,” Dwikorita said.

Dwikorita said the Jabodetabek area will still be classified as safe tomorrow. He said the intensity of the rain tomorrow will be light to moderate.

“So West Java or Jabodetabek on December 28 is still green, so God willing, it won’t be, so it’s medium, light to medium green,” he said.

Dwikorita assured that BMKG and BRIN have been working together so far to change the weather.

“Regarding the issue of extreme potential, we are currently collaborating with BRIN, working together to implement weather modification technology that will allow rain clouds to enter the mainland, producing intense or extreme rainfall, which can be forced into the Sea of Java or in areas outside settlements, or in lakes or reservoirs for example,” he said.

“So, God willing, according to this forecast, West Java and Jabodetabek, until December 28, God willing, can still be controlled, still relatively safe, only starting from the 29th, according to our forecast, we are starting to be careful for that,” he said.

BMKG asks to be careful using the term hurricane

Furthermore, BMKG Meteorology Deputy Guswanto called on all parties to be careful in using the term. He confirmed that the extreme rains and storms were different.

“I want to reinforce the head of the BMKG that one must be careful when using the terms, in the news that are circulating there are terms storms, storm attacks, perhaps this needs to be clarified, this is heavy rain, if we look at it there is a legend” Guswanto said.

Guswanto then viewed a weather map of Indonesia. According to him, the claim that the big storm was an exaggeration

“So the forecast presented is an overestimate, so BMKG will give our forecast on the 30th, our basis is to broadcast the possibility that bad weather will affect Indonesia in West Java, Jabodetabek region with extreme rainfall above 150”, has explained.

BMKG Public Meteorological Center Chief Fachri Radjab said the same, he pointed out that from BMKG modeling, Jabodetabek will receive heavy rain on December 30, 2022. According to him, on Wednesday (28/12) and Thursday (29/12) the Jabodetabek area it has not yet received heavy rain, but has asked residents to remain vigilant.

“Also, Jabodetabek has the potential for rain, from the modeling results, the potential for Jabodetebek on 30 is very heavy indeed. While (date) 28 itself is still in the mild to moderate category, (date) 29 is also still moderate and it tends to rain a lot in the sea, the Java Sea, the Jabodetabek Sea. So far what needs to be vigilant is the 30th, but that doesn’t mean it won’t rain on the 28th-29th, there is rain but moderate intensity”, Fachri explained.
