Adults with chronic conditions (back pain, arthritis, COPD) can improve their fitness through aquatic exercise, which has been shown to be as effective as regular exercise
The study was published in the journal BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine.
High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a workout that alternates short periods of high-intensity activity with periods of rest. HIIT can be performed on land or in water. To evaluate the effects of high-intensity training in water on people with chronic diseases, scientists analyzed 18 studies.
The experiments involved 868 people (74% women) with various diseases such as back pain, arthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), type 2 diabetes and multiple sclerosis. Some of them had more than one disease.
HIIT exercises in water significantly improved the patients’ fitness and were as effective as exercises on land. Participants’ physical fitness was assessed using tissue oxygen consumption, walking tests, and exercise. In addition, exercise in water resulted in fewer injuries, which may be due to less stress on the joints.
