Windows 10 will support AAC, or Advanced Audio Coding, over Bluetooth in an upcoming update later this year.
Better sound with AirPods with Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 21370
Support for this format means that Windows users can now enjoy better sound quality when using Apple AirPods, or using services such as iTunes or Apple Music.
Until now, Windows has supported AptX and SBC over Bluetooth.
Dev testers can try now
Microsoft will add support for this in the next major Windows 10 update, but those on Windows Insiders will actually have the opportunity to test this in Preview Build 21370 which became available yesterday.
In addition to this, Microsoft also improves the interface, you know the speaker icon in the toolbar where you select audio device? There you will now see a simple sound profile per unit, instead of there being several for the same product, ie both microphone and speaker: now it is changed to the correct input and output unit:
Finally AAC over Bluetooth
Another improvement is finally AAC Bluetooth wireless support:
“AAC is a lossless codec that delivers high-quality audio in smaller file sizes, which means they are smart for streaming,” explains Microsoft.
