The bluetongue virus is currently hitting hard in the municipality of Barneveld. 57 companies have now been affected, which means that the municipality is depicted in deep dark red on the NVWA contamination map. Bluetongue is spread by small biting flies, which transmit the disease to ruminants such as sheep, goats and cows.
The village of Barneveld is the hardest hit within the municipality. The virus has been found here 18 times in total. The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) distinguishes between clinically positive infections (detected on the basis of characteristic symptoms) and PCR-positive cases, which are actually detected by blood tests.
