Bluetongue Virus Outbreak Forces Cancellation of Livestock Exhibition at Late Summer Festival Week

PURMEREND – The planned livestock exhibition, one of the parts of the late summer festival week, is cancelled. After previous cancellations due to Corona, the outbreak of Bluetongue virus disease is the reason why the cattle exhibition has to be removed from the program of the late summer festival week. The virus disease has been detected in North Holland and Utrecht and is now making sheep in particular sick. The affected farms are now blocked and can no longer evacuate animals.

The virus disease is especially a risk for sheep, but all ruminants, including goats and cattle, are also susceptible to it. The infection is through mosquito bites. The sheep and goat organizations that would participate in the event have informed the Purmerend Marktstad Foundation, organizer of the late summer festival week, that the members of those organizations present have decided not to participate.

“We understand the concerns of the organizations and understand that the participants have decided to do this. Due to the absence of approximately 150 participating animals (sheep and goats), the livestock exhibition would only take place with approximately 12 cattle and students from the Clusius College. That is why we, as the board of the Purmerend Marktstad Foundation, believe that this interpretation does not do justice to what we are used to. And for that reason we have decided to cancel the livestock exhibition on Thursday, September 14,” said Kees Ouderoot, chairman of the Purmerend Marktstad Foundation.
