Bluetongue Outbreak: Measures and Vaccination Protocol in Region of Murcia Livestock Farms

The Community has detected cases of bluetongue in three livestock farms in Águilas, which is why it has “immediately” launched the action protocol to prevent its spread, which involves measures such as disinfestation of farms, limitation of movements and vaccination of animals.

It is a disease present in other autonomies and that the Community, together with the sector, is trying to eradicate in the Region of Murcia, as reported by sources from the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries consulted by Europa Press.

Regarding movements, the European Union differentiates between free and restricted regions. From now on, farms in the Region that are going to send their animals to the slaughterhouse must meet a series of requirements, among which are that both the vehicles and the animals be disinfested.

If they are going to be sent to another feedlot, whether in a free or restricted region, they must, in addition to the above, provide a negative PCR from the last 15 days.

Vaccination

The regional government has purchased 72,000 doses of the vaccine against bluetongue, which will be administered next Monday through the Health Defense Associations to the animals on the cattle farms of Águilas, Lorca, Puerto Lumbreras and Mazarrón, as it is the most close to the three affected farms, which will be the first to be vaccinated.

The vaccination process will continue subsequently, and until the month of April – when the period of activity of the transmitting mosquito begins – in the rest of the animals in the sheep and cattle herd in the Region. In total, there are about 36,500 cattle and 350,000 sheep.

To coordinate these works, the Community has asked the minister of the sector, Luis Planas, to convene “as soon as possible” the Sectoral Conference on Agriculture to deal monographically with emerging diseases that affect different autonomous communities.

It should be remembered that the disease does not pose a risk to human health, since it only affects ruminants of different species, and is not transmitted or contagious to humans. It also does not require the sacrifice of affected animals.
