The Department of Agriculture and Livestock of the Government of Castilla y León has detailed with the veterinarians of Segovia and professional organizations the vaccination plan to deal with bluetongue disease in the cattle and sheep herds of the province. The regional Administration has finally listened to the SOS that had been launched by health professionals and the livestock sector, who were “absolutely incapable” of complying with the instruction given by the General Directorate of Agricultural and Livestock Production. The guideline was to vaccinate some 200,000 head on Segovian farms between January 1 and May without external support.
Regional officials have responded to the demand for reinforcements because the shortage of veterinarians made the inoculation of all cattle within the period established by the standard “unfeasible.” For this reason, and as has been done on previous occasions in other provinces, the solution that has been put on the table and that is going to be applied is to increase the number of personnel who will be dedicated to going around the farms to administer the vaccine against bluetongue.
Specifically, there will be twenty teams “from all the provinces” of the community, reveals the president of the Official College of Veterinarians of Segovia, José Miguel Gil. The meeting in which details of the reinforcement to carry out the immunization campaign were given took place this Wednesday. The Junta de Castilla y León will subcontract the necessary service to cover vaccination with the company Eulen; and it will be this company that will call professionals to enlist them in the vaccination of some 100,000 cows and as many sheep throughout the Segovian geography, both from small farms and from other larger and more numerous ones.
Revacunar
The proposed agreement will accelerate the organization of the campaign and its materialization. After the meeting between the parties involved, the head of the collegiate institution estimates that there will be about 34 professionals who will join the Segovian veterinarians, whose ‘rows’ are made up of “between fifteen and twenty.”
The strategy that has been outlined consists of concentrating the first dose for the immunization of cattle in the first two weeks of February. After 21 days, the animals must be revaccinated, so it is expected that cattle, or at least a large percentage, and particularly reproductive cows, will be inoculated throughout the second month of the year. The plan for the sheep herd is scheduled for Easter. The intention is to proceed with the vaccination on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before the holidays.
