Blue Zone Secrets for Longevity and Health: Tips from Residents of Okinawa, Sardinia, Nicoya, Icaria, and Loma Linda

Jakarta

Long life and without health problems is a bit of desire of many people. Many want to get both things naturally, without the help of certain drugs.

This has become a reality for the residents of the Blue Zone. They can stay healthy and live long enough to be a century old, without any particular health problems.

Blue Zone or blue zone is an area in the world whose inhabitants can live longer than the average. This term was popularized by Gianni Pes, Michel Poulain, and Dan Buettner because residents in the area can live healthy until the age of 100.

Several areas included in the Blue Zone, namely Okinawa in Japan, Sardinia in Italy, Nicoya in Costa Rica, Icaria in Greece, and Loma Linda in California, United States.

To get health and longevity, Blue Zone residents have some tips. Some of them, such as:

Activity Routine

Residents in the Blue Zone are always on the move and move around naturally every day. For example, such as walking and sitting on the floor more often, as well as making additional movements such as squats which are repeated every day.

“Every time they go to work, to a friend’s house or shopping, there is an opportunity to go for a walk,” says expert Dan Buettner, quoted from the page Muscle and FitnessSaturday (8/7/2023).

For example, while visiting a 104-year-old woman in Okinawa, Japan (to study the inhabitants of the Blue Zone), Buettner observed the woman essentially squatting about thirty times a day just getting up from the floor to complete daily tasks.

Buettner feels this daily movement may play a big role in strengthening the lower body thereby increasing longevity.

No Screen Time

Unlike citizens in many countries who use gadgets more often, Blue Zone residents move more often every 20 minutes or so. That makes them more ‘exercise’, when compared to people who have to go to the gym to exercise.

More Often Consuming Plant Foods

Approximately 90 percent of the Blue Zone’s traditional dietary intake comes entirely from plant sources, and 65 percent from complex carbohydrates.

“The Five Pillars of every longevity diet in the world are, grains (wheat, rice, and corn) tubers (sweet potatoes, and others), green vegetables (about 60 varieties) nuts and legumes, Buettner explained.

They have very limited or very little meat, dairy, sweet drinks and foods, and processed foods.

Their habit of moving and the food they consume is one of the reasons Blue Zone residents live longer. This is because they have low stress levels, and are socially connected which gives them a strong sense of attachment and purpose.
