Until now, such an account was free and intended for celebrities, companies and politicians, among others. By signing up for a subscription, everyone will be able to get a blue check mark behind their name. In this way Musk hopes to make Twitter profitable.
So far, around 423,000 users have a verified account. Critics fear that the subscription service will make it difficult to distinguish fake accounts from real ones and that cheaters will simply pay for the blue tick.
According to Musk, those accounts will be deleted without disturbing the subscription refund. “If scammers do it a million times, that’s a lot of free money.”
