Attention all ‘Blue Lights’ fans! If you haven’t watched Episodes One to Four, be warned that this review contains spoilers. Last week’s episode saw the officers of Blackthorn PSNI Station back on the streets of Belfast after an Ombudsman’s investigation. However, members of the McIntyre gang were also back and recovering a cache of Libyan weapons. The episode ended with a massive narrative gamble that proved the writers’ ambition to make ‘Blue Lights’ a truly great cop drama. Dormer’s outstanding performance as Gerry Cliff continues to impress, while the supporting cast also provide solid performances. If you prefer the traditional TV route, be prepared to wait a week for the final episode. ‘Blue Lights’ truly demonstrates its strength as a drama tackling the complexities of contemporary Northern Ireland policing. With the hard work of thorough research and carefully setting up the narrative, the writers were able to masterfully execute the plot in this episode.
