Flickering blue light in the night sky over New York: people suspect aliens and divine apparitions. However, the cause was different.
A transformer exploded in a power station in the Queens borough of New York. The New York police announced on Friday night on Twitter. The flashes of light over the city were probably due to the explosion, it said. The fire is under control. According to the fire department, no one was injured.
Mayor spokesman: “No extraterrestrials”
A company spokesman for energy supplier Con Edison confirmed to CNN that there were several fires. According to NBC, some transformers went offline, which triggered the fire. The evening sky was lit up in shades of blue by the explosions. The smoke was visible as far as Manhattan. Many concerned citizens would have contacted.

“No extraterrestrials,” noted Mayor Bill de Blasio’s spokesman on Twitter. Previously, the flickering blue light in the night sky in the network had led to wild speculations, ranging from aliens to superheroes and even a divine apparition.
The explosion briefly caused problems at New York’s LaGuardia domestic airport. The airport tweeted that passengers should therefore plan additional time. Because of the power failure, flight operations are restricted. Some flights may not take off. Later it was said that all terminals had electricity again. The New York subway line 7 was also affected. The utility company Con Edison said it was investigating the cause of the incident.
