A performance inspired by starting pitcher Robbie Ray saw the Blue Jays defeat the Chicago White Sox by a score of 3-1 Wednesday in Toronto.
The 29-year-old completely handcuffed his opponents in seven innings of work, taking out 14 of them on strikes. However, he was the gunner who allowed the opponent’s only point, due to a walk and five hits allowed.
It was also Yoan Moncada who was able to produce the visitors’ only point in the third round.
In relief, Tim Mayza and Jordan Romano were able to continue the work of Ray, they who completed a round each. The first of the two left two opponents in the dust, while the second got his 13th save of the season.
Despite Ray’s brilliant performance, Mayza (4-1) was awarded the victory.
At batting, the home side were able to break a 1-1 tie late in the eighth inning. Alejandro Kirk first pushed Teoscar Hernandez home with a single. Two hitters later, with the pads all occupied, Randal Grichuk was offered a walk that allowed Breyvic Valera to trot to the plate to register his third point.
Earlier in the game, more precisely in the fourth inning, Corey Dickerson had produced his first point by hitting a triple.
Still, visiting starting gunner Lucas Giolito had a good game, allowing just one run on five hits and one walk. He also spent six Blue Jays in the mitt. The defeat did not go to his record, but rather to that of reliever Aaron Bummer (2-5).
The two teams will meet for the last duel of a series of four, Thursday, still at the Rogers Center.
