Mexico.- This tiny marine inhabitant, known as the Blue Dragon, could pass for an adorable Pokémon, but behind its charm and colorful body lies a deadly danger. Michael McBride, the creator of Idea Soup, reveals the true nature of this gastropod nudibranch, Glaucus atlanticus.
Blue Dragon: A Deceptive Appearance with Mortal Danger
On the beaches, the Blue Dragon looks like a creature from a fairy tale, but its adorable appearance hides a deadly poison. This marine nudibranch, similar to a Pokémon, arouses the curiosity of many, but its bite can cause pain, nausea and even allergic reactions.
The Blue Dragon, just three centimeters in size, resides in the open sea and floats on the surface of the water. Despite its small size, its sting, similar to that of a jellyfish, can cause serious symptoms such as vomiting and dermatitis. However, what is surprising is that this tiny predator does not produce its own venom; he acquires it from more dangerous creatures, such as the Portuguese Caravels.
Its astonishing diet includes such deadly prey as the Portuguese man-of-war, whose tentacles measure up to 50 meters. The blue dragon, immune to the poisons of its prey, stores these toxins in its limbs, enhancing its venom. Its camouflage system, with white parts that simulate sunlight and blue parts that confuse aerial predators, makes it a stealthy threat.

The bite of this small dragon can be fatal, although it is not common. Michael McBride highlights its surprising combination of beauty and danger, suggesting that something so beautiful and poisonous should be almost illegal. It is not the first time that nature presents us with creatures with beautiful but potentially deadly colors, reminding us that beauty sometimes hides unexpected risks.
