The Olympics shape athletes and spectators alike like no other event. The Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 were special – in many ways. Ulrike Meyfarth, Heide Rosendahl and Klaus Wolfermann as well as the outstanding Mark Spitz (USA) became celebrated sports icons. At the same time, a horrific attack on the Israeli wrestling team overshadowed the “cheerful Munich Games”. Munich 1972 is a very special chapter in the history of the state capital, the Federal Republic and in the history of the modern Olympic Games. 50 years Olympic Munich: The city of Munich, sports associations and athletes are looking forward to this anniversary in a big way.
Sustainable to this day: the park architecture
Last but not least, the one-off and enduring to this day Architecture of the Münchner Olympiaparks, designed by architect Günter Behnisch, and the graphic and design services of Otl Aicher made the Olympic Games in Munich unforgettable. Because to this day, the facilities from back then are still used for sport and culture. And a large number of the anniversary events take place in the Olympic Park and in the former Olympic sports facilities, such as the Olympic rowing regatta course in Unterschleißheim.
Festival of games, sports and arts
Munich is also celebrating its Games 50 years after the Olympic Games. In addition to a large number of lectures, guided tours and exhibitions about the 1972 Olympics, the games and above all about the Palestinian terror, there will also be sport for everyone – to watch, cheer and participate.
50 years Olympic Munich
This is the highlight of the anniversary program of 50 years of Olympia Munich, which is packed with numerous events from May to September Festival of games, sports and arts from July 1st to 9th, 2022. As for the Olympic Games themselves, there will be an appropriate opening ceremony in the Olympic Hall to open the festival week on July 1st. There will be sports to participate, “touch” and cheer on the immediately following weekend from July 2nd. With a big parade involving athletes, artists, music groups and many others, a jubilee procession sets off from downtown Munich to the Olympic Park.
“Club is more!”
Munich residents and all interested sports clubs are also part of the parade. Organized by the Munich Sports Youth (MSJ) embody club sport. “We want to make it clear together with the entire organized sport: A club is so much more than just doing a sport. In the club you will find friends for life. It is won together and lost together. No matter what age, gender, nationality or origin. In the club, everyone is equal and everyone is important. The club is about community, personality development, passion, recognition and of course lots of fun. We would like to ensure that as many children and young people as possible are active in sports clubs – as athletes or as volunteers. We are also spreading this message during the parade: the club is more!” explains the deputy youth secretary of the MSJ, Pascal Lieb. Interested clubs, athletes, officials or representatives of sports associations can still register as part of the parade (e-mail: info@msj.de).
Presentation of the BLSV honorary award
During the following celebrations and sporting anniversary competitions of 50 years of Olympia Munich in and around the Olympic Park, there will also be the honoring of deserving volunteers in Bavaria with the BLSV honorary office award. The festival activities on the Olympic grounds are framed by an extensive art exhibition paired with live performances and modern installations – of course all in connection with the events of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.
