Sony has been overtaken by reality on several levels and this is an obvious emergency measure.
There is probably an effect in terms of production numbers of the PS5, but due to supply problems, this (PS5) already has problems and less than was previously planned.
It appears that Sony intended to end production of PS4 in late ’21 and (assuming) convert the assembly line to a line for PS5 after that. This is not necessary at the moment because they do not achieve the desired numbers at other production locations.
I understand the idea that they are doing everything they can to keep existing gamers within the PS ecosystem and attract new ones to avoid choosing a competing ecosystem. But at the same time it is also a strange emergency because to do with the old generation PS4 that within a few years it will be completely phased out and no new releases will be released. And also against the principle “We believe in console generations”.
By then, how many new gamers will feel somewhat cheated by a previous-generation PS4 system they acquired in late 2021 or 2022? In fact, they are “forced” to still purchase a PS5 and are tied to the PS ecosystem (which is what Sony is actually about).
It is reasonable to assume that this concerns PS4 sales to new gamers (or through parents, among others) who may not be fully aware of console generations or of gaming in general. They have bought something new and therefore want to be able to play the newest of the newest for a longer period of time. For new gamers, a back catalog is less interesting or not a valid argument. Of course there are plenty of gems to play on a PS4, but they remain old games and have a different experience than a recently released game. If you have bought something new, you also want to be able to play the newest of the newest for a longer period of time.
