Bloomberg has learned that some British ministers are holding private discussions about replacing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak before the parliamentary elections.

Details: Ministers have been holding closed discussions in recent days as they explore the possibility that the ruling Conservative Party could be forced to replace Sunak ahead of the election, the sources said.
The interlocutors explained to the publication that the question is whether the interim leader will help contain the surge in popularity of the opposition Labor Party.
The report said the talks were catalyzed by a series of political scandals that highlighted Sunak’s alleged inability to make quick policy decisions, including promises of tax cuts and a controversy over racist remarks allegedly made by one of the party’s biggest donors.
Sources indicate that ministers involved in the negotiations remain supporters of Sunak and do not want a change in the head of government.
None of the rivals appear to have enough support to challenge him, and so the prime minister will be able to hold out until the elections, Bloomberg reports.
If a candidate emerges who can take the job without much competition, Sunak would likely be ousted, two senior ministers said.
Conservatives are now awaiting local elections, which will take place on May 2. According to one of the ministers, in the event of unsuccessful results, it will be difficult for the prime minister to explain to fellow party members why he should lead the conservatives in parliamentary elections.
Previously Sunak ruled out holding parliamentary elections on May 2, saying they would instead take place later this year.
According to a recent YouGov poll, Britain’s ruling Conservative Party will suffer a stunning defeat at the elections.
Sunak previously stressed that his “working assumption“is that elections will take place in the second half of 2024.
In July, Sunak’s approval rating fell to the lowest level from the moment of appointment to the position.
