Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on this mobilization on Monday, after troops from both sides came into conflict on Sunday. The Armenian Defense Ministry reported that fighting was going on throughout the night, while the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said that Armenian forces shelled the city of Terter.
Azerbaijan reports that six civilians have been killed and 19 injured. According to the Armenian Ministry of Defense, 200 Armenians would have been injured. The breakaway region reported that 15 soldiers died between Sunday night and Monday, in addition to the 16 soldiers killed on Sunday.
Fighting between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces over the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region continued Monday morning with heavy artillery deployed on both sides, both sides said.
On Sunday, the conflict between both arch enemies flared up again. The fighting cocks in the Caucasus accuse each other of starting shelling in the disputed region. Both sides have also reported fatalities since Sunday.
Azerbaijan and Armenia have been engaged in a territorial dispute over the Armenian-backed breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region for decades. The new collisions are the worst since 2016.
Many countries and the United Nations have called for an immediate ceasefire and a return to the negotiating table.
