A guideline published today by the Dutch College of General Practitioners states that physicians should consider administering ‘low molecular weight heparin’ to patients with (high suspicion of) Covid-19 as a precaution. Heparin is a drug used to prevent or treat blood clots.
It specifically concerns people who are bedridden and have a history of a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism.
Deep vein thrombosis
Venous thrombosis is when a blood clot blocks a vein (a vein), explains the Thrombosis Foundation. This often happens in the legs. A clot from the leg or abdominal cavity can break off and enter the lungs. That is called pulmonary embolism. A clot can also form in the lungs, also called a pulmonary embolism. A DVT develops in the deeper veins.
It is the first time that general practitioners have prescribed medicines to risk groups to prevent serious consequences of a Covid-19 infection, the NOS reports. In total, it would be about 150,000 to 200,000 people.

Research among 184 corona patients in intensive care in Dutch hospitals shows that half of them experience thrombosis symptoms. Patients who suffer from it are more likely to die.
